Canada’s Trade Deficit Narrows in July

Report bolsters hopes the economy is improving after weak first half of the year

OTTAWA—Canada’s trade deficit narrowed in July, beating expectations and bolstering hopes the economy is improving after a weak first half of the year.
Canada posted a trade deficit of 593 million Canadian dollars ($447 million), compared with a revised C$811 million deficit in June, Statistics Canada said.
Expectations were for a C$1.2 billion deficit, according to economists at Royal Bank of Canada.
Nonenergy exports remained strong for a second consecutive month, increasing 4.0% in July.
The Bank of Canada has said it expects non-resource exports to be a key driver for economic growth during the second half of the year, as low oil prices continue to hurt business investment and drive down the Canadian dollar. Those exports should be helped by the strengthening U.S. economy and weaker Canadian currency, which makes Canadian goods cheaper abroad.
Canadian exports rose 2.3% to C$45.46 billion in July, with exports to China and the U.S. leading the overall gain. On a volume basis, Canadian exports advanced 1.0%.
“The export leap builds on a strong June, and is line with our view that Q3 will see a return to positive GDP growth overall,” CIBC World Markets economist Avery Shenfeld said in a note.
Thursday’s trade report, the first major Canadian indicator for July, comes two days after Statistics Canada data confirmed that the country’s gross domestic product shrank in two consecutive quarters during the first half of the year. Many economists say there is little evidence the downturn is widespread, however, citing resilience in labor markets and consumption data.
Trade figures for the U.S., also out Thursday, showed its trade deficit shrank 7.4% from June, with exports climbing 0.4% and imports declining 1.1%.
In Canada, motor vehicles and parts led the export gains in July, rising 9.9% to C$7.55 billion. Exports of consumer goods increased 7.3% to reach a record C$6.4 billion.
The gains in exports were offset in part by a 5.7% decline in energy-product exports to C$7.33 billion. Prices for energy products were down 6.9%, while volumes increased 1.3%.
Imports rose 1.7% in the month to C$46.05 billion, led by increases in energy products and aircraft and other transportation equipment and parts.
